The Government of Canada Scholarship 2023 application period will begin soon. The Government of Canada Scholarships 2023 are available to PhD students from all over the world. A total of 166 scholarships will be awarded to highly qualified graduates interested in studying in Canada and conducting research for the benefit of humanity. The scholarship is open to all international students who are also Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

Doctoral, MA/PhD, MD/PhD or Masters programs leading to a Doctorate degree are eligible for this scholarship. Canada funds the doctoral program for three years. We are looking for outstanding candidates with leadership qualities and academic merit for our PhD scholarship program. Postgraduate scholarships are awarded based on three fundamental factors: academic excellence, leadership potential, and research promise.

The organization was founded by Georges P.Vanier, Canadian soldier and the country’s first governor-general. There is a slight difference between the application process and the standard scholarship application. Individuals cannot apply alone. Anyone wishing to nominate someone should contact their research institute, or the institute can do so themselves.

Criteria for eligibility

To apply for a Vanier Canada graduate scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants and submitting universities must adhere to the requirements.
  • A foreign national, a Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident of Canada may apply.
  • It must be their first time receiving a PhD.
  • Furthermore, they may only be nominated by a single university or institute.
  • After publication of results, the applicant must intend to study for a full-time PhD during the summer semester or the following academic year.
  • PhD candidates must have completed their PhD degree in no more than twenty months of full-time study (as of 1 May 2022).
  • There are no additional scholarships, awards, or funds available for PhD programmes.
  • Candidates must have earned a first-class average in each of their last two years of full-time study.
  • In addition, candidates may not be currently receiving any fellowships or scholarships from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

Application Process

Researching Canadian universities is the best way for applicants to secure admission to the desired institute. Once the first step is completed, launch the Research Net application and then complete it as per the 2023 Vanier Canada Postgraduate Scholarship application requirements. The application can only be completed in English or French.

Ensure all required procedures are completed and required documents are attached in the correct format. Check the form again to make sure nothing was missed. Submit your application to the nominating institute before the internal deadline. Nominations from the nominating institutions/universities are sent to the secretariat.

If more than one institute is interested in nominating a student, the student should select only one institute as multiple nominations for the same student will disqualify the student. Nominees are responsible for contacting the Institute for further information regarding application and selection.

November 1, 2022 is the application deadline for the Vanier Canada Scholarships. Applications will be accepted until June 30, 2022.

Additional Information:

  • Applicants who will be unsuccessful in getting these scholarships will not be provided any feedback.
  • EduCanada scholarships will not be renewable or postponed
  • Funding of scholarships will be only from the Canadian government
  • Scholarships are not taxable for either the Canadian institutions or scholarship institutions
  • Funding of scholarships will be provided by Global Affairs Canada through its legal title: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development DFATD.

Financial Coverage:

Successful Applicants will get many financial benefits from the DFATD, scholarships rewards will be as follows:

  • Canadian Dollars 10,200 for college, undergraduates students masters or Ph.D. for four-month or one term of study or research
  • CAD 12,700 for graduates masters or Ph.D. for 5 to 6-month terms of study or research
  • Applicants will also get 500 CAD as administration cost once the successful candidates arrive in Canada
  • In certain cases, Canadian institutions may be eligible for reimbursement of additional employer compliance fees paid to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.

Eligible Expenses:

  • Visa or study/ work permit fees from the scholarship expenses
  • living expenses such as accommodation, utilities, and food
  • Ground transportation including public transportation pass
  • Book supplies are required for the recipients’ study or research, excluding computers and other equipment.

The Canadian institution will receive funding from DFATD in the form of a contribution agreement and disburse funds to scholarship recipients according to its internal processes.

$80m Canadian scholarship announced

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a new $80 million scholarship program over eight years for people from developing countries.

Universities Canada stated that the goal of the new Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 program is to “educate, educate and empower” thousands of people from more than 24 developing countries.

The program, part of a $500 million package targeting “key priorities” such as food security, climate change and gender equality, was announced at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Rwanda.

Funded by Global Affairs Canada, it focuses on providing quality education and training opportunities that fight inequalities and help improve the lives of individuals and communities.

Trudeau said it is a “critical time” for countries “to come together to defend Ukraine while addressing the global implications of Russia’s illegal invasion, such as food security and affordability.

“We are also focused on expanding our relationships with the Commonwealth countries, including Rwanda, to create good jobs and middle-class growth that benefits everyone as we continue to fight climate change together.”

The scholarship is administered by a partnership that Colleges and Institutes Canada and Universities of Canada have formed with the West African Economic and Monetary Union, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Association of African Universities.

Description

The project aims to channel the creativity and productivity of a new generation of students and young professionals, especially women, to contribute to poverty alleviation and inclusive growth in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. More specifically, it aims to deepen the knowledge and develop practical skills of mid-level students or professionals from the ASEAN region in fields of study that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Project activities include: (1) providing short-term (up to 8 months) study/research scholarships to ASEAN students at Canadian post-secondary academic institutions in fields of study aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals; (2) the creation of institutional arrangements between Canadian and ASEAN post-secondary academic institutions; (3) providing short-term fellowships to mid-career ASEAN professionals working in sectors contributing to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to enhance their knowledge and skills in their field of work; and (4) creating an alumni network.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased knowledge and skills of youth and young professionals, especially women, in areas that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; and (2) strengthened linkages between ASEAN and Canadian post-secondary academic institutions.

Results achieved

Results achieved by (March 2020) include: (1) 138 short-term scholarships awarded to students (54% of whom are women) from seven Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries (including 44 from Vietnam, 38 from Singapore, 24 from Thailand, 12 from Malaysia, nine from the Philippines, eight from Indonesia, three from Myanmar) to study in eight Canadian provinces in a field aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals; (2) the creation of 32 institutional agreements between Canadian and ASEAN post-secondary academic institutions; and (3) awarding four short-term fellowships to Cambodian mid-career professionals working in sectors contributing to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
